OLOH TV – Come See The C&D Canal

Baltimore Harbor is around seven nautical miles from the upper Chesapeake Bay, has excellent protection and proved to be an excellent spot to tie up OLOH when we needed to leave her for a few weeks.  The Anchorage Marina is a large and secure facility which is very well run under the management of Dockmaster Wayne.  It’s an easy place to recommend.

Heading back to the upper Hudson River from there is a trip we would ordinarily make in four or five travel days.  Our plan was to stop on the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal (the C&D) to split up the 105 nautical mile trip to Cape May, New Jersey before heading offshore and up the New Jersey Coast to New York Harbor (a 123 nautical mile trip).  But you want the conditions on that ocean day to be as comfortable as possible and because we were only able to put together two great weather days, we jumped all the way from Baltimore to Cape May.

Come along for the ride and experience a big day underway, see what we see in the C&D and find out if the often notorious Delaware Bay got in the way of Jasper’s comfort…

  1. Great sail. Since I am always in the details, what time of the year was this. And....always interested to see the fuel consumption of this or any trip you do. Not sure if this is possible unless you top up after a run. Enjoyed the video. Robert
    1. Thanks so much Robert! This was filmed in June of 2022. We'll do our best to include fuel burn in the future - our monitoring system gives us a total which we log for each leg of our travels. While we don't have the precise stats accessible at the moment, we can presume we burned around 110 gallons based on the day's time and distance.
  2. As usual you are both the most organized and fun wanderers to follow on the water. I use wanderers because my boat name was wanderlust. Again it has brought back memories of 4 times cruising from the Chesapeake to Ontario via the C&D and Cape May canals. Are you planning on cruising back down to west florida next season? If so hope you get to sarasota. Keep up the fun. Irwin
    1. You are too kind. And we're so glad it brought you back! We are definitely headed south but not yet sure if we'll make it to the Gulf coast. Stay tuned...
  3. Totally amazing! I mean really, the best pizza EVER! Ha Another great OLOH informative adventure. Never been in the C&D, but have been aboard many brutal trips thru the Delaware Bay. Good route guys! Peace and Love
  4. Having passed through the C&D several times myself, one thing I think folks should know is that the large ship traffic through the canal is monitored by a dispatcher at Chesapeake City - and while we cruisers (because of size) don't need to formally check in and report, it is informative to listen on channel 13 to assist your overall situational awareness. Coast Pilot 3 talks a bit about the system a bit.
    1. Great suggestion, thanks. We always monitor channel 13 when underway in the USA and suggest that others do to.
