The Adventures Of OLOH – So Far…

From: The Captain –

It can be hard to know exactly what defines success for an adventure like the one we’ve been on since departing New York’s Hudson Valley on October 31, 2017.  But I’ve got at least one idea.  There are two phrases I’ve been thinking a lot about that are usually tossed around as sarcastic, witty responses.  But in the case of what we’ve been up to and where we’ve settled in for our longest stop of the journey so far they are both true.  So if you run into Tim or me – or maybe even Jasper – and ask us, “how’s it going?”… if we respond with “livin’ the dream” or “another day in paradise,” just know that there’s no wit intended and certainly no sarcasm – only truth.  And as we say every day, we take none of it for granted.  So we’re going to claim success.

We were introduced to one of our favorite spots so far – the Geiger Key Marina Fish Camp Restaurant.  About an hour’s ride by dinghy.

Thankfully, Jasper hasn’t had any difficulty relaxing.

Every day, people we meet ask us about what’s next, where will OLOH be heading?  And the answer, so far, has been that we’re not exactly sure.  Which is a successful continuation of our theme of having some ideas but not over-planning.  We talk a lot about disappearing to the Bahamas and that is still very much of interest to us but, again, no firm plans just yet.  And as to the question of when… same basic answer.  Although we have decided to stay put at our present home for longer than we had originally thought as we are really starting to settle in and truly love it here.  There’s something so exactly right about this place that we couldn’t have predicted and it happened on so many levels.  A great marina with a wonderful staff.  An island vibe.  A real community of boaters.  A bohemian little village.  Sea life.  Guinea hens!  We’ll call that success as well.

Why did the guinea hens cross the road? To get away from Jasper, of course.

We’ve enjoyed maybe a libation or two on the top deck.

Boat projects have been underway, some of which we’ll be detailing on the website.  A lovely, local canvas artist is hard at work on new covers for OLOH’s bridge seating.  We met a fantastic diver here and our starboard prop is off the boat having the ding we suffered on the Okeechobee Canal repaired.  On our trip into Key West, we reached 250 hours since acquiring OLOH and since she had her last oil change so she’s now got new lifeblood and filters.  I’ve also become fairly adept at troubleshooting and replacing a few electronic components on our air conditioning system with some kind guidance from a local pro – a very gratifying experience.  More elements of success.

Oil change underway. That’s only what would fit in the companionway between the engine rooms.
A Captain’s work is never done.

We’re tossing around the idea of a few short trips while based in Key West – anchoring in The Marquesas Keys or the Dry Tortugas, or maybe even a run over to Cuba.  But no plans are in place just yet.  We love running the boat and seeing new things.  But we’re so satisfied with where we are that we also love being dockside, for now.  Success.

Among our many visitors, it was great to have Nuts & Beans back on board. We discovered a terrific sandbar together and all was well with the world.

Jasper has been enjoying his fair share of dinghy rides and Key West sunsets and sometimes both at once.

Arriving in Key West was the culmination of a progressive journey from our starting point in the northern Hudson River to the southernmost part of the continental United States with only about 26 miles of backtracking when we went north to Punta Gorda from Captiva and back.  And many people have asked us about the cumulative numbers from all of this forward momentum so here they are:

36 travel days
2072 statute miles traveled
2265 gallons of diesel used (.91 mpg – that’s actually pretty good for a boat this size)
Not us.   At a nearby marina an unfortunate mishap led to this sad scene for Motor Yacht Bonkers.
Finally, it is a great cruisers community here and we’ve loved meeting and spending time with fellow travelers at our new home, some of whom we’ve crossed paths with along the way, some who have stumbled upon our blog and were good enough to introduce themselves and others just walking the docks (or their pups).  More success.
