Happy New Year From The South?

From: The Captain

Weather: Snow. Some sleet or freezing rain possible. High 28F. Winds NNW at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of snow 100%.

OK.  We know we’re not alone.  You’re either dealing with extreme cold and wintry weather or reading/hearing about it.  But we’ve had a lot of people reaching out wondering what it is like down south where OLOH is holed-up for a few days this New Year’s week.  Well, like most of the east coast and midwest, it has been cold.  As in, open up the exterior water sources on the boat and turn off the water pump at night cold.  Fortunately the OLOH’s heat works perfectly and the interior stays cozy.  The engine block heaters keep the big Detroits nice and toasty.  But we did not really believe we would see what we saw today.  We’ll let the pictures below do the talking but if our mission in our first winter of boating down south was, in part, to avoid experiencing snow, mission not accomplished.  This is not what we signed up for.  However, we are quick to remind ourselves we are on a boat so… happy problem (though we are now saying that with a bit less enthusiasm).  It should be in the 70’s by the time we cross the Florida-Georgia line in a few days.

Stay warm & safe!

Here’s hoping that ice doesn’t scar our new Strataglass!

Eisenglass or Ice-englass!!
The sky darkened as the heavier snow began to fall.
The view from the writer’s desk. On the dock right next to OLOH is the dock house and the snow is beginning to accumulate on the tin roof. Through the window, you can see the anchor of the Nordhavn that sits in the slip on the other side of the dock.

This 1928 Elco has surely seen a lot – but probably not a lot of snow. This just doesn’t look natural.
Our dear friends on S/V Ripple are the ones who encouraged us to come to Savannah to ring in the New Year. Just sayin’.

The fine folks in Georgia sure ain’t used to this.
Jasper certainly doesn’t know what all the fuss is about – he loves the snow!
