When your friends need a hand getting their 70 foot motor yacht down the east…
Northbound ’19 – Travel Day 21: Deltaville, VA to North Beach, MD
Distance traveled: 80 nautical miles
Time underway: 7 hours 43 minutes
Average Speed: 10 kts
Max Speed: 17 kts
Fuel used: 111 gallons
Our departure was slightly delayed as we wanted to have one of our air conditioning unit’s freon charged up by the highly recommended Jimmy Olgers of Sea Cool (the recommendation was spot-on). Also, while going through our pre-departure checks, Captain Scott noticed the generator’s seawater output seemed a bit low so we shut everything down and cleaned the strainer which had a bit of muck in it. But once we were all checked out we were underway and as soon as we were back out on the Chesapeake the sun came out for the start of what was simply a great day on the water. Tim’s spinach and turkey bacon omelets also helped to set the tone.
Once we were clear of the mouth of the Potomac the easy swells of the bay turned to a wonderful calm and the sun continued to warm the day. Boat traffic was very light and Captains A.J. and Scott handled the helm while Tim was busy at his desk in the salon on important real-world work.

People often ask us what we do to pass the time on long days like this where we’re not facing the navigational challenges of the ICW that command your constant attention (mind you, we’re always paying close attention to everything going on all around us, but we’re often tracking a waypoint for an hour or more without the need for any intervention). Well, Scott and I (A.J.) listened to quite a bit of Classic Vinyl on SiriusXM while having important conversations about the music we were listening to while also solving the world’s problems. I also spend some time planning for the days ahead and making dockage reservations.

Today we entered state number six of our journey. We chose Herrington Harbor South in North Beach, Maryland, primarily because it was at a distance that made sense between Deltaville and our next stop of Baltimore (we stopped in Solomons on this leg our last time through). From our research, it looked like a great place and had very complimentary reviews. All of the info we had seen was spot on and it was a wonderful discovery that was so much more than a convenient stopover. It’s a beautiful spot with a terrific restaurant, grounds and great energy and will certainly be a destination marina for us when we spend more time on the Chesapeake. At 60 feet we were one of the largest boats here but they had a terrific T-head to accommodate us.

We had dinner at the onsite restaurant, Ketch 22. Both inside and outside are terrific places to dine. We sat outside and had the pleasure of listening to a live band called Mixed Business. We’ve heard some great live music along the way, and this group is definitely one of our favorites. They are a really talented group of musicians and they sure can jam! Check out their link to hear more amazing music.

Our last “big” city before New York, Baltimore is next. See you out there!
